The Kpandai parliamentary election rerun has been put on hold by Ghana’s Supreme Court.
The Tamale High Court’s decision led the Electoral Commission to schedule the election for December 30.
However, on Tuesday, December 16, 2026, Ghana’s top court decided that the EC should stop all rerun-related activity.
Since then, the matter has been postponed until January 13, 2026, for a new hearing.
Matthew Nyindam, a parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is requesting that the Supreme Court examine and overturn the ruling of the High Court, claiming that the court improperly seized jurisdiction in the election petition.
Daniel Nsala Wakpal, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, filed the case before the High Court to contest the results of the 2024 elections.
Nyindam claims that the election petition was void from the start and that all related procedures should be dismissed.
He argues that the Supreme Court’s participation through judicial review is justified because the High Court violated its legal mandate and made basic mistakes.
The NPP requested a stay of execution after the High Court’s decision to annul the election, hoping to prevent the Electoral Commission and the NDC from enforcing the order in any way, including holding a repeat, until the Supreme Court made a decision.
The Supreme Court’s decision to halt the rerun maintains the existing quo while it takes into account the application’s substantive concerns.
