The five presidential hopefuls of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday, January 22, 2026, committing to defend the party’s collective interest and support the ultimate presidential primary victor.
Ken Ohene Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central; Dr Byran Acheampong, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi; Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Vice-President and 2024 Presidential Candidate; Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, a former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe; and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former General Secretary of the NPP.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, commonly known as the “Peace Pact,” is a component of the Presidential Elections Committee’s (PEC) attempts to guarantee a peaceful and harmonious primary process. The flagbearer election is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The candidates pledge to stay faithful, loyal, and supportive of the party’s eventual presidential candidate in the 2028 general election under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed in good faith and in the spirit of patriotism, loyalty, unity, and party cohesiveness.
In a statement, the PEC, which is led by former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei-Owusu, called on all parties involved to back this effort and strive for a smooth and peaceful primary process.
“The committee is confident that this initiative will contribute to a peaceful and successful primary process, and looks forward to announcing the eventual winner,” it said.
Former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Danquah Smith Buttey, the party’s acting national chairman, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the general secretary, and Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, the chairman of the National Council of Elders, would all be present at the event in Accra.
The others are Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader; Patricia Appiagyei, his deputy; Prof. Mike Oquaye, the former Chair of the PEC; and Akosua Frema Osei Opare, the National Council of Patrons.
It is the final event before the election of the party’s flagbearer.
All 276 constituencies and the party’s national headquarters would be represented in the 277 polling places across the nation where the election would take place. With no option for proxy voting, a total of 214,812 delegates would be anticipated to cast ballots.
In a previous announcement, the PEC reaffirmed that no private or unauthorised security arrangements would be allowed at any polling place on election day, and that the Ghana Police Service had been given exclusive jurisdiction over security plans for the primary.
It stated that this was to guarantee a credible and peaceful electoral process.
