A state-of-the-art Steel Ball Mill and Section Mill Manufacturing Plant by B5 Plus Group has been officially commissioned by President John Dramani Mahama, who has described the investment as a bold step in Ghana’s economic development and a major boost to the 24-Hour Economy agenda.

The new plant significantly increases Ghana’s ability to manufacture pre-engineered building (PEB) systems, grinding media balls for the mining industry, structural steel sections and a variety of heavy industrial structures, such as factory systems, warehouses, tankers and trailers.

President Mahama stressed the value of industrial self-reliance during his speech at the commissioning on Friday, February 20. He pointed out that Ghana could save hundreds of millions of dollars if steel imports were cut by even 20 to 30 percent a year.

“If we reduce steel imports by even 20 to 30% annually, the foreign exchange savings alone could amount to hundreds of millions of dollars. This is what industrial sovereignty is about,” he said.

President Mahama went on to stress the plant’s strategic importance in boosting indigenous steel output.

“Steel consumption is a strong indicator of industrial development,” he said.

“Across emerging economies, per capita steel consumption rises in tandem with infrastructural development, urbanisation, and industrial expansion.”
