In Kyiv, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a high level to discuss attempts to gain the release of two Ghanaians detained as POWs in Ukraine.

The Foreign Affairs Minister stated that the meeting’s main focus was Ghana’s humanitarian request for the detained nationals’ release, arguing that their rights must be upheld in conformity with international law.

He was upbeat about the current negotiations, pointing out that they were moving well.

Concerns about trafficking networks exposing vulnerable African adolescents to hazardous conditions associated with the ongoing violence after promising them safety were also discussed during the talks.

Both nations looked into measures to improve their collaboration in order to stop such illegal activity and shield youth from exploitation.

Mr. Ablakwa expressed the gratitude of the Ghanaian government and John Dramani Mahama to the Ukrainian authorities for protecting the rights and well-being of the Ghanaians who were imprisoned.

In addition to the prisoner talks, the two presidents decided to strengthen their bilateral ties by forming strategic alliances in trade, education, military, and agriculture.

Additionally, President Zelenskyy formally invited President Mahama to visit Kyiv, indicating Ukraine’s desire to deepen its economic and diplomatic connections with Ghana.

The engagement is a major diplomatic step as Ghana expands international collaboration in important areas while stepping up efforts to protect its nationals overseas.
