President John Dramani Mahama travelled to Fuveme in the Volta Region to inspect villages impacted by recent tidal waves and consult with locals on both short-term assistance and long-term coastline conservation strategies.
He pointed out that the region is covered by the $150 million West Africa Coastal Areas Management Program (WACA), which is funded by the World Bank and aims to mitigate the effects of tidal waves and coastal erosion on vulnerable people.
Residents were reassured by the President that the project, which is presently in the design phase, will soon begin to be implemented. This includes building groynes, marine defence systems, and ecosystem restoration techniques like planting mangroves and coconut trees.
The government is investigating quick fixes in the interim, such as dredging the estuary to lower pressure and prevent more harm.
