In the Central Region’s Ekumfi District, seven individuals have been taken into custody for reportedly declining to take part in the National Sanitation Day event.

The defendants were arrested at Ekumfi Essuehyia and Ekumpoano for carrying on with their businesses during the required cleanup effort, defying orders to assist locals in clearing markets, streets, and gutters.

The arrests were made by police officers stationed across the district to keep an eye on compliance.

Nana Ismeal Asamoah, the district chief executive for Ekumfi, highlighted that the cleaning drive is not only a government program but rather a shared national obligation.

He declared that his administration will strictly enforce rules and cautioned that inadequate waste management and clogged drains are major contributors to the nation’s flooding.

The DCE further stated that anyone who wilfully disobeys sanitary regulations would be subject to the full force of the law.

Ebenezer Abeiku Essian, the National Apprenticeship Program’s Central Regional Director, praised the locals who took part and encouraged the young people to normalise environmental cleanliness.

In order to permanently address Ghana’s ongoing flooding and sanitation problems, Mr. Essian also urged authorities to dismantle any illegal buildings constructed on waterways, pointing out that frequent cleanups must be combined with stringent planning enforcement.
