President John Dramani Mahama has taken part in the exercise at several places throughout the city of Accra.

He emphasised the government’s dedication to both communal civic duty and environmental cleaning.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank all who have come out to help. Clearly, we can see what the cause of our problems is. Look at the plastic and the sand.

“Let us make sure that after we take all the silt out, we bring enough capacity to transport this to the appropriate place. Let me congratulate all Ghanaians. The turnout has been very good. This will be a continuous exercise,” he reiterated.

In the seven areas impacted by the recent floods, the government designated Friday, July 10, 2026, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days under the direction of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee.

This two-day national exercise, with the topic “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods,” aims to activate our shared responsibility to protect lives, secure the environment, and clean up our communities nationwide.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications, stated in a statement on Monday, July 6, that all citizens are urged to fully participate in this important national activity.

  • Friday, 10 July 2026: Personnel from all security agencies, the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies will commence the cleanup.
  • Saturday, 11th July 2026: The general public will join the security agencies and assemblies to scale up the exercise.

This two-day workout will mostly concentrate on:

  • Desilting choked drains to ensure free, uninterrupted water flow ahead of the heavy rains.
  • Sweeping and clearing sand, weeds, and debris from major roads, streets, and highways.
  • Cleaning up public spaces, including markets, lorry parks, recreational parks, and communal waste collection points.

This two-day practice is both a crucial intervention and an important national awakening.

Plastic pollution and careless trash have choked our drainage systems for far too long, causing catastrophic, avoidable floods that damage livelihoods and take valuable Ghanaian lives.
