More than 100 acres of farmland have been destroyed by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in Ghana’s Eastern Region, raising fresh concerns about food security, environmental degradation and the impact of illegal mining on agriculture.
The destruction of farmlands has affected agricultural activities and threatens the livelihoods of farmers who depend on the land for their income. The continued spread of illegal gold mining in Ghana has also intensified concerns over land degradation, water pollution and the loss of productive agricultural areas.
Authorities and stakeholders are being urged to strengthen measures to combat galamsey in the Eastern Region and protect Ghana’s farmlands from further destruction.
