The public has been reassured by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) that there hasn’t been a cholera outbreak following the floods on June 29.

However, the GHS has warned that preventive actions are still essential to avoiding a possible public health emergency.

This was revealed on Saturday, July 11, during a disinfection exercise at the Adabraka Polyclinic and Tema Station Market by Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service.

The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly and sanitation partner LCB Worldwide worked together to conduct the activity.

Fortunately, no cholera outbreak has been reported as of yet. However, prevention is crucial. We don’t have to wait for an outbreak to take action. The expense of treatment is very high, according to Dr. Akoriyea.

His comments follow the devastating floods on June 29, which revealed serious sanitation issues in a number of the nation’s regions.

Concerns about a potential outbreak of waterborne illnesses were raised by the floods, which left behind piles of trash, stopped drains, and standing water.

Dr. Akoriyea clarified that the current disinfection drive is a component of larger initiatives to protect public health in the wake of President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for a statewide cleanup.

He emphasises that cleansing public areas is just as important to stop the spread of illness as cleaning flood-affected areas.

“After cleaning, the next step is disinfection and fumigation to avoid outbreaks of cholera, typhoid and other illnesses,” he stated.

In an effort to lower future flood risks and safeguard public health, government organisations, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, security agencies, businesses, and citizens participated in a nationwide clean-up exercise on July 10 and 11.
