Ghana’s strong performance in gold and cocoa exports played a major role in helping the country record a significant increase in its trade surplus during the first half of 2026, according to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama.
Dr Asiama said the continued growth in exports of the two major commodities had strengthened Ghana’s external trade position and provided additional support for the country’s economic growth and financial stability.
The gold mining and cocoa sectors remain important sources of foreign exchange for Ghana, with their export earnings contributing to improved economic conditions and stronger international reserves.
The BoG Governor made the remarks during a stakeholder engagement in Sunyani in the Bono Region on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
Dr Asiama also reaffirmed the Bank of Ghana’s commitment to implementing policies aimed at maintaining macroeconomic stability, strengthening the Ghanaian cedi, controlling inflation and supporting sustainable economic growth.
The latest development highlights the growing importance of Ghana’s gold and cocoa exports in improving the country’s trade balance and strengthening the broader economy.
