The Accra Onion Sellers and Importers Cooperative Society and the Cross Border Women Traders Association have praised the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, for her swift intervention in resolving the recent Ghana-Nigeria onion trade dispute.
The development follows the lifting of a suspension on onion exports to Ghana by the National Onion Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, allowing the supply of onions between Ghana and Nigeria to resume.
The traders’ cooperative, which brings together five major onion sellers’ associations, including groups from Accra, Adjei Kotoku and Dominanse in the Central Region, commended the Minister and her team for engaging stakeholders to address the concerns that had disrupted cross-border onion trading.
At a stakeholder meeting in Accra on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, involving representatives from Ghana and Nigeria, Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare called for an immediate resolution to the dispute.
She stressed the importance of maintaining strong Ghana-Nigeria trade relations and deepening economic cooperation within the ECOWAS sub-region.
The Trade Minister urged all parties involved to set aside their differences and work toward creating a stable and mutually beneficial business environment for traders in both countries.
She warned that a prolonged disruption in the onion trade could have serious economic consequences for farmers, importers, traders, transport operators and consumers in Ghana and Nigeria.
Following the intervention, the four Ghanaian trucks carrying onions from Nigeria that had been held up were released as of Thursday, August 13, 2026. The confirmation was made by the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Onion Sellers and Importers Cooperative Society, Mr. Osman Mohammed.
The association also disclosed that Nigerian trucks carrying onions that had already arrived in Ghana had successfully completed the offloading of their produce at various markets across the country.
The traders have welcomed the resolution and expressed optimism that the intervention will lead to a lasting solution to Ghana-Nigeria trade challenges, stronger cooperation among traders and increased agricultural trade across the ECOWAS region.
The resolution is also expected to support the stability of onion prices and food supply, while protecting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers, traders and transport operators involved in the cross-border agricultural trade.
