The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced plans to revive the Security Services Sports Games (SESSA Games) as part of government efforts to promote unity, teamwork, discipline and sports development among Ghana’s security services.

The Minister disclosed that a committee has already been established to develop the framework and modalities for bringing back the inter-security services sporting competition. The 2026 SESSA Games are expected to be held in November.

SESSA Games Set for November 2026

Mr Muntaka made the announcement when the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, paid a courtesy call on him to discuss plans for the revival of the security services sporting competition.

According to the Interior Minister, sports should play an important role in the lives of security personnel beyond their regular professional duties.

He explained that bringing personnel from the various security agencies together through sporting competitions would help strengthen camaraderie, discipline, teamwork and institutional cooperation.

The revival of the SESSA Games is therefore expected to create an opportunity for personnel from Ghana’s security services to interact, compete and build stronger professional relationships.

SESSA Games to Help Discover Football Talent

The Interior Minister also highlighted the potential of the games to support football talent development in Ghana.

He said the competition could serve as an important platform for identifying talented footballers within the security services who could eventually progress to the national level.

With several security personnel actively involved in sports, the SESSA Games could provide a structured pathway for discovering new football talent and contributing to the development of Ghana’s national teams.

District and Regional SESSA Competitions Planned

Mr Muntaka revealed that although the 2026 edition of the SESSA Games would be organised at the national level, government plans to expand the competition in future years.

The proposed structure would begin with sporting competitions at the district and regional levels, before the best participants advance to the national SESSA Games.

The broader structure is expected to increase participation and provide opportunities for sporting talents from different parts of Ghana to be identified and developed.

It could also help strengthen grassroots sports development while promoting healthy competition among the country’s security institutions.

Government Pledges Support for SESSA Games Revival

The Interior Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the revival of the Security Services Sports Games and restoring the competition to its former prominence.

He said the initiative would contribute to stronger relationships among Ghana’s security services while creating additional opportunities for personnel with sporting abilities.

The revival is expected to cover different sporting disciplines, with football likely to remain one of the major attractions of the competition.

GFA Supports Revival of Security Services Games

GFA President Kurt Okraku expressed the association’s willingness to support efforts to revive the SESSA Games.

Mr Okraku noted that Ghana’s security services have significant sporting potential, particularly in football, and said the competition could help unlock that talent.

According to him, reviving the inter-security services games would promote unity, cohesion and teamwork while creating a valuable pool of football talent for Ghana.

The GFA’s interest in the initiative could provide additional support for talent identification and development as Ghana continues to strengthen its football development programmes.

SESSA Games and Ghana Sports Development

The return of the SESSA Games is expected to combine sports development, national unity and professional cooperation among Ghana’s security services.

Beyond competition, the games could provide security personnel with opportunities to develop their sporting abilities while fostering stronger bonds among institutions responsible for protecting the country.

The planned November 2026 edition will therefore mark an important step towards restoring one of Ghana’s inter-security sporting competitions and creating a sustainable platform for discovering future sporting talents.
