Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston believes the Black Stars face a difficult task in qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following their disappointing start to the qualifying campaign.
Ghana have lost their opening two Group C matches, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in Bouaké before losing 4-2 to Gambia at home. The results have left the four-time African champions at the bottom of the group without a point.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in a double-header in November, with both matches expected to be crucial to their hopes of reaching the continental tournament.
Speaking to 3Sports, Kingston expressed concern about Ghana’s poor performances, arguing that the team may need a remarkable turnaround to keep its qualification hopes alive.
“Looking at the situation now, it will be a miracle for us to qualify,” Kingston said, noting that Ghana would need to win its remaining matches to improve its chances.
Ghana’s current struggles follow another disappointing AFCON qualifying campaign in 2024, when the team failed to record a victory after managing three draws and three defeats.
The Black Stars also missed out on the 2025 AFCON, ending their run of consecutive appearances at the tournament dating back to 2004. Their recent continental performances have included a round-of-16 exit in 2019 and group-stage eliminations in 2021 and 2023.
Amid the team’s poor form, head coach Carlos Queiroz has departed by mutual consent. Black Queens coach Kim Lars Björkegren, alongside Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, has reportedly taken charge of the men’s national team on an interim basis.
With Ghana recording just one victory in their last 12 matches heading into the latest international fixtures, pressure is mounting on the technical team and players to improve their performances.
The upcoming matches against Somalia could prove decisive in determining whether the Black Stars can revive their 2027 AFCON qualification campaign.
