The Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has paid a working visit to the Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR) to gain first-hand knowledge of its operations and assess its contribution to healthcare delivery, scientific research and innovation in Ghana.
The visit formed part of efforts to deepen understanding of the Centre’s role in developing and promoting safe, effective and locally produced plant-based medicines for use within Ghana’s healthcare system.
During her visit, the Deputy Health Minister toured several key departments and laboratories at the facility. These included the Microbiology Laboratory, Haematology and Biochemistry Laboratories, Drugs Analysis Office, Pharmaceutics and Quality Control Laboratory, and the Production Unit.
At the various facilities, Prof. Dr Ayensu-Danquah received briefings on ongoing medical research, laboratory testing and herbal medicine development. She was also taken through processes involved in the analysis of plant-based medicines, pharmaceutical quality control and the production of herbal medicinal products.
The Deputy Minister interacted with researchers, scientists and technical staff working at the Centre and commended them for their efforts toward advancing plant medicine research in Ghana.
She praised the Centre’s contribution to promoting the development of locally manufactured herbal medicines that meet acceptable standards of safety, quality and effectiveness.
Prof. Dr Ayensu-Danquah stressed that scientific research, innovation and quality assurance remain critical to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system.
She further called for sustained efforts to ensure that plant-based and herbal medicinal products produced in Ghana undergo the necessary scientific assessment and meet established safety, quality and efficacy standards.
The Deputy Minister’s visit highlights the government’s continued interest in strengthening health research and development, herbal medicine production and local pharmaceutical innovation as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery in Ghana.
