The Minister for Transport, Hon. Nikpe, has visited Mpakadan as part of his working tour to inspect ongoing railway and port-related infrastructure projects aimed at improving cargo transportation and reducing congestion at the Tema Port.
The projects are expected to facilitate the efficient movement of containers from the Tema Port to landlocked countries served through Ghana, strengthening the country’s position as a key transportation and logistics hub in the sub-region.
During the tour, the Transport Minister inspected the ongoing works and assessed the readiness of the facilities to support an efficient intermodal transport system involving rail, road and inland water transportation.
Hon. Nikpe commended the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) and Volta Lake Transport Company Limited (VLTC) for the progress made on the projects.
He urged the two institutions to intensify collaboration with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to ensure that operations commence as soon as possible.
According to the Minister, the timely operationalisation of the facilities will help decongest the Tema Port, improve cargo movement and reduce pressure on existing transportation networks.
The Mpakadan projects form part of the government’s broader efforts to develop an efficient intermodal transportation system in Ghana capable of supporting both passenger and freight transportation.
The initiative is also expected to improve logistics efficiency, enhance trade connectivity and provide a more reliable transportation corridor for the movement of goods between Ghana’s ports and landlocked countries in the West African sub-region.
