Veteran Ghanaian actor Kofi Ajorlolo has disclosed that a two-year ban imposed on him by Ghanaian film producers was lifted after only a few months when the restriction failed to prevent him from getting acting jobs.
According to the veteran actor, the decision was intended to stop him from appearing in Ghanaian movie productions. Ajorlolo said he was the first actor in the Ghanaian film industry to receive such a punishment and described himself as a “sacrificial lamb” in the dispute.
However, the actor explained that the ban did not achieve the results its organisers expected.
Nigerian filmmakers continued to hire Kofi Ajorlolo
While Ghanaian movie producers sought to limit his opportunities locally, Ajorlolo said Nigerian filmmakers continued to approach him for acting roles.
He recalled receiving calls from producers in Nigeria who wanted him to feature in their movies, allowing him to remain active in the entertainment industry despite the restriction placed on him in Ghana.
The continued demand for his services outside Ghana, according to Ajorlolo, eventually prompted local producers to reconsider their decision.
Two-year ban lifted after six to eight months
The original punishment was expected to prevent Ajorlolo from working in Ghanaian film productions for two years. However, he said the ban was withdrawn after approximately six to eight months.
“After six months or eight months or so, they themselves just pulled that thing out that I should come back,” he recalled.
The veteran actor described the experience as a difficult period in his career but said it ultimately created new opportunities for him within the West African film industry.
According to Ajorlolo, the experience strengthened his professional relationship with filmmakers outside Ghana and demonstrated that opportunities in the entertainment industry could extend beyond the local movie market.
His account has renewed discussions about Ghana’s film industry, actor-producer relations, movie industry disputes and the growing connection between Ghanaian and Nigerian entertainment.
