The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has announced a new contra-flow traffic arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major routes leading into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD).
The new Ayalolo BRT traffic arrangement will take effect from Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and will operate during peak traffic periods from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The designated routes are the Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra and Kasoa–Accra corridors, which are among the major commuter routes affected by heavy traffic congestion during peak hours.
Ayalolo Contra-Flow Lanes for BRT Buses
Under the new system, selected sections of the affected roads will be temporarily converted to allow authorised Ayalolo buses to travel against the regular direction of traffic in the designated priority direction.
The contra-flow lanes will be exclusively reserved for Ayalolo BRT buses. Private cars, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will not be allowed to use the designated lanes.
The Ministry said the initiative is part of government efforts to improve public transportation in Accra, reduce traffic congestion and provide more dependable transport services for commuters travelling to and from the Central Business District.
Ghana Police to Enforce Traffic Rules
The Ayalolo BRT contra-flow system is being implemented in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR).
The MTTD will deploy traffic officers to strategic points and major intersections along the affected routes to manage traffic and enforce compliance with the new Accra traffic management measures.
Government expects the intervention to improve the punctuality of Ayalolo buses, shorten commuting times and help reduce traffic congestion on key roads leading into Accra’s CBD.
The initiative is also expected to encourage more commuters to use mass public transportation in Accra, thereby reducing the number of private vehicles on already congested roads.
Motorists Urged to Cooperate
The Ministry has urged motorists, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, businesses and residents along the Amasaman, Adenta and Kasoa corridors to cooperate with traffic officers during the implementation of the new arrangement.
Road users have also been encouraged to follow traffic instructions and avoid entering the designated Ayalolo BRT contra-flow lanes to ensure safety and prevent further congestion.
The new traffic measure forms part of broader efforts to improve urban mobility, public transport efficiency and traffic management in Accra.
