Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will remain firm in the face of what he described as attempts by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to intimidate members of the opposition.
Speaking about Ghana’s political environment ahead of the 2028 general elections, Mr Agyarko said the NPP would not allow fear or intimidation to prevent its members from carrying out their political activities.
He alleged that some NPP supporters and individuals associated with the party were already being targeted, describing the situation as an attempt to create fear ahead of the next general election.
Agyarko Says NPP Will Stand Its Ground
Boakye Agyarko said the NPP would not retreat because of what he described as political pressure or intimidation.
He cited the reported arrest of a lawyer involved in defending a client as an example of what he considers an attempt to discourage people from participating in political and legal activities.
According to Agyarko, such developments should not be allowed to create fear within the opposition party.
He stressed that the NPP would continue to stand its ground and participate fully in Ghana’s democratic process.
Agyarko Recalls Alaji Bawa Incident
The former Energy Minister also referred to an incident involving Alaji Bawa, which he said represented the type of political violence and intimidation he did not want to see repeated.
Agyarko said the incident, including the serious injuries suffered by Bawa’s wife, remained a reminder of the consequences of political violence.
He maintained that such incidents should have no place in Ghana’s political environment and reiterated his position that the NPP would not be intimidated.
NPP Will Not Initiate Confrontation, Agyarko Says
Agyarko said the NPP would not be responsible for starting political confrontations but warned that the party would not simply accept intimidation if provoked.
He called on NPP supporters to remain firm while pursuing political activities through democratic and lawful channels.
His comments come as the NPP prepares for its National Chairman election scheduled for October 3, 2026.
Four Candidates Contest NPP National Chairman Position
Four candidates are contesting the NPP National Chairman position in the October 3 election.
They are:

- Sammy Crabbe
- Paul Afoko
- Boakye Agyarko
Boakye Agyarko is fourth on the ballot paper.
The contest forms part of the NPP’s broader efforts to reorganise its leadership and structures ahead of the 2028 Ghana presidential and parliamentary elections.
Survey Projects Agyarko as Leading Candidate
A nationwide survey conducted by the Ghana Watch Initiative International (GWII) between September 1 and 12, 2026, projected Boakye Agyarko as the leading candidate in the NPP National Chairmanship race.
The survey reported that Agyarko led in 13 of Ghana’s 16 regions and recorded majority support among sampled constituency executives.
The report placed Agyarko at 51.81%, followed by former NPP General Secretary John Boadu with 32.32%.
Former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko recorded 12.39%, while former NPP First Vice Chairman Sammy Crabbe polled 3.48%.
The survey, according to its final report, involved 2,098 respondents drawn from the constituency executive structure.
The researchers, led by Seth Adu-Adjei, said the sample represented 40% of the constituency baseline of 5,244 and 29.30% of the official statutory delegate population of 7,160.
Agyarko Focuses on Reorganising NPP for 2028
Boakye Agyarko said his immediate political objective is to reorganise the NPP and strengthen its structures ahead of the 2028 elections.
He also said he wants to help former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia secure victory in the 2028 presidential election.
Agyarko questioned the personal benefit he would gain from undermining Bawumia’s presidential ambitions, arguing that his focus is on securing political power for the NPP in 2028.
He said his political calculations do not extend to a possible presidential bid in 2037, given his age and the political timeline.
Agyarko Calls 2028 NPP’s Main Target
The NPP National Chairman hopeful described the 2028 election as his main political priority, saying the party must work toward victory.
He told NPP supporters that his priority as National Chairman would be to rebuild the party’s grassroots structures, strengthen internal organisation and create an effective political machinery ahead of the next general election.
Agyarko has therefore appealed to NPP delegates to support his candidacy in the October 3, 2026 National Chairman election, arguing that the mandate would enable him to reorganise the party and strengthen its preparations for the 2028 campaign.
