Residents of Adidome in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region have raised concerns about ongoing sand winning activities along the Volta River, warning that the practice could pose serious risks to the river ecosystem and aquatic life.
The residents say the activities involve the use of dredging machines mounted on the Volta River, with large pipes extending into the water to extract sand from beneath the riverbed.
The extracted sand is then pumped through the pipes and transported to the riverbank, where it is sold for use in the construction industry.

According to residents, the increasing sand winning activities could have implications for the Volta River environment, water quality and aquatic ecosystems if not properly regulated.
They are therefore calling for greater monitoring of sand dredging and riverbed mining activities in the area to help protect the river and its surrounding environment.
The concerns come amid growing calls for stronger environmental protection measures to safeguard Ghana’s major water bodies from activities that could threaten aquatic life, natural habitats and sustainable water resources.
