The chiefs and people of Aburi defied a heavy downpour on Saturday afternoon to celebrate this year’s Odwira Festival, marking the climax of the 200th anniversary of the Akuapem Odwira.
The grand durbar, held at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Aburi, was celebrated on the theme: “Education, Health, Culture and Environmental Health: Keys to Sustainable Development.”
The celebration was led by the Aburihene, Otoobour Djan Kwasi II, who is also the Akuapem Adontenhene, with the Deputy Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, as the special guest.
The anniversary offered an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Akuapem people and reflect on the role of education, healthcare, cultural preservation and environmental health in sustainable development.

Organised under the auspices of the chiefs, queen mothers and elders of Akuapem Adontenman, the celebration also featured a fundraising campaign to support a dialysis centre project.
The anniversary activities began earlier in October with a health screening exercise at the Aburi Botanical Gardens, organised in collaboration with the Aburi Girls’ Old Students Association. Other activities included a fitness walk at Dapaatu and an Akwasidae observance at Nsakye.
