In 1 Peter 4:8, we are admonished to continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sin.

The quoted scripture means, genuine love covers the faults and weaknesses of others. We must not be excited listening to the gossips about people’s faults and weakness. A certain level of constructive criticism is fine but we must not join other people to be overly critical about the sins and weaknesses of others.

As Christians, we must demonstrate love by bearing in prayer, those whose sins and weaknesses bother us. Beyond prayers, we must engage such people directly to draw their attention and counsel them.

Sin must not be covered, it must be exposed. But gossiping about other people’s sin and weakness is not tantamount to exposing sin. It is a pure holier than thou attitude that also points to our deficit in love.

But the fact that love covers multitude of sin doesn’t mean we are to condone sin. It means we must deal with other people’s weaknesses directly with them through counsel and rebuke and never through joining others in gossip.

We tend to enjoy gossips about other people’s weaknesses than ministering directly to them to help deal with their challenges. This doesn’t please God. May God help us develop His kind of love so we can cover multitude of sin without necessarily condoning them.
