The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been called before the council to be questioned by the traditional authorities in Manhyia, Ashanti Region.
The summons was issued in response to requests for the chiefs’ intervention by NPP members, particularly Ashanti Region MPs, in order to mend what they considered to be a rift between Chairman Wontumi and the council.
The chiefs were not persuaded and demanded that Chairman Wontumi personally address the issue before the council, despite reports that he was absent from the meeting on Monday, January 22, 2022, at Manhyia for health reasons.
It is said that remarks made by Chairman Wontumi damaged Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s authority.
The purported occurrence happened during Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh’s vetting process as the Energy Minister and Manhyia South Member of Parliament.
The Manhyia South Constituency Organizer and Chairman Wontumi allegedly got into an argument because the chairman neglected to recognize the Manhyia South Member of Parliament’s contributions to the party’s internal operations.
Chairman Wontumi is said to have insulted Otumfuo’s Brempon Nana Kwaku Duah, Chief of Kokoso, during the 30-minute turmoil that followed. He allegedly said that he had established his kingdom in Ashanti and threatened to fight Otumfuo if they disagreed on a matter.
Later, Chairman Wontumi refuted any doubts about Otumfuo’s authority, asserting that the remarks ascribed to him were untrue.
Nana Kwaku Duah, however, maintained that Chairman Wontumi had made the derogatory remarks about Otumfuo during the vetting process.
He added that an unidentified person had reported the event to Otumfuo, which prompted Nana Saamanhene to become involved and ask Nana Kwaku Duah what had happened.
When Chairman Wontumi questioned Otumfuo’s authority, Nana Kwaku Duah accused Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as “Nana B,” the NPP’s national organizer, of neglecting to publicly defend Otumfuo.
He stressed that it was improper to treat Otumfuo disrespectfully during an NPP vetting since he is the only one with a kingdom in Ashanti.
Following these events, the party delegation approached the traditional rulers to request their help in addressing Chairman Wontumi’s purported behavior.
The council has requested that the chairman personally attend in order to address the accusations made against him.
The Ashanti community and general public are asked to wait for more information regarding the procedures’ conclusion as the council moves forward with its inquiry and issues the summons.
The goal of this investigation is to preserve the Ashanti Kingdom’s long-standing customs and reverence for authority.
