The Justice for Ghana (J4G) demonstration’s organizers were given permission to picket in “Revolution Square” in front of “Jubilee House,” but an Accra High Court ordered them to carry out their intended action at the El-Wak sports stadium in Cantonments, Accra.

J4G informed the Police of their intention to picket at “Revolution Square” in a letter dated November 21, 2022, sent to Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare.

Among other things, their statement of intent specified that “the number of participants would be limited to 30 persons and that the picketing will only last for eight (8) hours, beginning at 8:00am and ending by 4:00pm.”

The picketing will take place inside the guarded perimeter of “Revolution Square” in order to minimize inconvenience and interference with crucial services. The letter signed by one Selorm Dramani Dzramado said, “The location of the picketing, the “Revolution Square,” has been carefully picked because the goal of the event is to address the president and his government whose office and seat of government is directly opposite.

“Holding the picketing at the “Revolution Square” will certainly give the President and his government a front-row view of the overall excruciating hardship in our beloved country and would also serve as an opportunity to get frank feedback from us the picketers about his performance as the President of the Republic of Ghana,” the picketers said. The letter went on to say.

As a result of receiving a letter from the J4G organizers, the Police filed a request with the High Court to halt the planned picketing in “Revolution Square,” arguing that doing so would have violated the Public Order Act of 1994. (Act 491).

Following consideration of the Police’s motion, the High Court prohibited J4G organizers from staging their proposed protest or picket at “Revolution Square.”

The court further mandated that the planned protest—also known as a picket—be moved to the cantonment’s El Wak Sports Stadium and held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022.

The J4G demonstration’s organizers, according to the court, “are to ensure full compliance with the provisions of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491)” as they go about their endeavor.
