Today, Friday, May 17, 2024, will see a special session of Parliament to discuss several pressing matters pertaining to government.
This comes after the Majority Caucus petitioned the Speaker of the House, Alban Bagbin, to call on the Members of Parliament to return to work today.
In a petition to the Speaker, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin cited Standing Orders of Parliament Article 112(3) and Order 53, which permit fifteen percent of House members to ask for an early recall of Parliament.
This emergency meeting’s agenda is anticipated to be centered on important government issues, such as approving a few newly screened Ministers and signing loan arrangements for extra cash for the budget.
A formal statement dated May 10th, issued by the Speaker’s office, says: “Pursuant to Article 112(3) of the Constitution of the Republic and Order 53(1) & (2) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, I, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby summon Parliament to sit on Friday, 17th May 2024 at ten o’clock in the forenoon, at Parliament House, Accra.”
