In Jeremiah 46:11, a scary prophecy was given to Egypt as follows: “Go up to Gilead and get balm, Virgin Daughter Egypt. But you try many medicines in vain; there is no healing for you”
Beloved, we thank God for making us see the light of day today. and for ushering us into the beginning of another week.
Let’s hear what He has for us as can be gleaned from the text quoted for the week. As we all may be aware, modern medicine is perceived as less curative and more as chronic disease management and prevention of more severe ones. A greater percentage of the common prescriptions seem to treat symptoms and not causes of the diseases. Hence, medical service providers avoid using the word “cure” and rather use “manage” since the root causes of medical problems are seldom addressed. Indeed, a Ghanaian Dermatologist, Prof Edmund Delle’s Rabito Clinic for handling skin diseases, has this as motto: “I medicate you and God cures you”.
Every man born of a woman battles with one health condition or the other and the issue of cure comes to focus in the text for the week, as the Lord gave some fearful prophecies against the gentiles, especially Egypt and her army, through Prophet Jeremiah. Though Egypt was militarily strong, the Lord maintained that it would not be victorious in battle and even with ample medicines such as the balm of Gilead, those who escaped with wounds after battle would not be cured. This meant no human medicine could cure the divine punishment meted out to them. But why? The reason was because they sinned and antagonized God. The solution to their losses in battle and their lack of healing after being wounded, wasn’t in medication that only treated symptoms but in repentance.
There continues to be innovations and breakthroughs in the field of medicine. New and seemingly more potent drugs are churned out periodically globally. But the root cause of sicknesses and diseases in the world has not been addressed. The fall of man through Adam, interrupted God’s initial plan of perfect health for all and brought sicknesses and other challenges along.
To enjoy sound health and cure today, we must first deal with sin, the source of diseases and sicknesses by repenting and believing in Jesus Christ. Sometimes, it may not make sense to abide in Christ and still be sick. But it may well be a call on us to humble ourselves in prayer to God or to remove all barriers to answered prayer, believe in God for our healing and claim His promises for our healing and health.
So, as we swallow the pills and take in herbals that only deal with symptoms and eventually gives us other side effects and complicate matters for us, let us pause and think about how to address the root cause of our ailments. It lies in our repentance; in our making peace with God; and in our removal of the barriers to prayers.
May the Lord help us as we struggle to deal with sin and to receive divine cure for what disturbs our health.
