Phase II of the Tsatsadu micro-hydropower production plant, built on the Tsatsadu waterfalls at Alavanyo in the Hohoe District of the Volta Region, has been put into service by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The Tsatsadu Generating Station (TGS), which was inaugurated by President Akufo-Addo in December 2020, was built entirely by Ghanaian engineers of the Bui Power Authority (BPA) and financed primarily by internally generated funds. Phase I of the TGS produced 45 KW of power, while Phase II adds 75 Kw.

Vice President Bawumia characterized the projects as part of the Government’s efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix and lessen the reliance on oil and gas for the generation of electricity. He also officially opened a Center of Excellence built by the BPA to house and provide practical training to Engineering students.

Dr. Bawumia, who is also the NPP’s flagbearer for the December elections, praised the BPA’s board and management for their efforts in diversifying the energy generation mix, noting that a Bawumia government would go above and above with the recent construction of a 5 MW solar farm on the Bui Dam.

According to Kofi Dzamesi, the chief executive officer of the Bui Power Authority, the organization was looking into building more micro-hydro facilities, such as extending the Tsatsadu waterfalls, in order to supplement the country’s energy supply.

“As I have indicated in my Manifesto for the 2024 elections, I will work to introduce 2,000 MW of solar power into our energy mix. This will significantly reduce the cost of electricity,  reduce the cost of living and operating a business. The solar panels will be manufactured here, further providing jobs for the youth,” Dr Bawumia stated.
