The 18th Ministerial Round Table brought together education officials, legislators, development partners, and technology specialists to talk about how Africa might create autonomous, creative, and cohesive learning systems that put the continent at the forefront of its future in digital education.

The keynote speaker, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education, emphasised that rather than relying on solutions created elsewhere, Africa needs to take the lead in digital learning.

He emphasised Ghana’s expenditures on online learning,

STEM, robotics, AI, and curricular improvements, while advocating for more robust institutions, equal access to technology-enabled learning, and locally relevant educational content.

The Minister cautioned against Africa becoming solely a consumer of technology developed outside the continent and underlined the need for more investment in AI literacy and the creation of ethical frameworks based on African values.

Mr. Edmond Moukala, the UNESCO Representative to Ghana, emphasised the value of foundational literacy in the era of artificial intelligence, pointing out that reading, writing, critical thinking, and information assessment continue to be crucial building blocks for digital and AI competences.

Additionally, he promoted public digital learning systems that safeguard data, assist educators, and advance education as a public good.

As the round table came to an end, all parties involved pledged to use technology responsibly, improve cooperation, and further Africa’s educational goals by developing inclusive, sustainable, and homegrown digital learning platforms.
