Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has called for stronger cooperation between Ghana and China to expand access to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and equip Ghanaian learners with the skills needed for the future.
The Education Minister said deeper collaboration in STEM education, artificial intelligence (AI), digital skills and emerging technologies would help prepare Ghanaian students for the changing demands of the global economy.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu made the call when the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Cong Song, paid a working visit to the Minister.
Ghana-China Education Partnership
During the meeting, Hon. Iddrisu expressed appreciation to the Government of China for its continued support for Ghana’s education sector.
He highlighted the establishment of Confucius Institutes at some Ghanaian universities, saying the initiative has contributed to strengthening educational and cultural relations between Ghana and China.
The Minister said Ghana values the longstanding bilateral relationship with China and looks forward to expanding cooperation in education, science and technology.
$30 Million China Grant for University in Damongo
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu also expressed appreciation to China for providing a US$30 million grant to the Government of Ghana to support the establishment of the University of Science and Technology in Damongo.
The proposed institution will focus particularly on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, areas considered critical to Ghana’s future technological and economic development.
The Education Minister expressed optimism that Ambassador Cong Song’s tenure would further strengthen Ghana-China cooperation, especially in the areas of education, science, technology and innovation.
Ghana Seeks Wider Access to STEM and Digital Skills
According to Hon. Iddrisu, Ghana’s partnership with China should go beyond existing educational interventions to create more opportunities for learners at all levels.
He said expanding access to practical STEM education and digital skills would help Ghanaian students develop the technical competencies required to participate effectively in the modern economy.
The Minister emphasised the need to expose learners to science, technology and emerging innovations from an early stage as Ghana works to build a skilled workforce for the future.
China Reaffirms Support for Ghana
Chinese Ambassador Cong Song reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening its cooperation with Ghana and strengthening partnerships that contribute to the country’s development.
He identified education, science and technology as important areas for continued collaboration between the two countries.
