The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to begin a nationwide electricity meter audit across its operational areas to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue collection and tackle electricity theft.

In a public notice, ECG said the exercise would involve inspecting and verifying prepaid meters, postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and their associated wiring to ensure accurate electricity consumption measurement and billing.

The company explained that the announcement serves as official notice of the nationwide meter inspection exercise. Customers should therefore be aware that ECG will not issue separate appointment letters or additional advance notifications before authorised personnel visit their premises.

ECG Urges Customers to Cooperate With Meter Inspection

ECG has advised electricity consumers, landlords, estate managers, property owners, facility managers and security personnel not to deny or delay access to authorised inspection teams solely because they have not received individual notification letters.

The company cited Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to provide utility employees or authorised agents with safe and reasonable access to their premises to read meters or inspect utility equipment.

However, ECG stressed that its personnel must present verifiable official identification and follow the access procedures outlined in the company’s Customer Charter.

How to Verify ECG Staff Before Granting Access

To protect customers against impersonation and potential fraud, ECG has confirmed that all employees and authorised agents participating in the meter audit will carry official identification cards.

Customers are encouraged to verify the identity of field officers before allowing them into their homes, businesses or properties.

Consumers can confirm the identity of ECG personnel through either of the following channels:

  • ECG Customer Call Centre: 0302 611 611
  • ECG Staff Verification USSD Code: *226#, available on all mobile networks.

Steps to Verify ECG Meter Audit Officers

Customers can follow these steps to confirm whether an officer is authorised to conduct the inspection:

  1. Dial *226# on your mobile phone.
  2. Select Option 5 – Verify Staff.
  3. Enter the six-digit verification code provided by the ECG staff member.
  4. Check the officer’s full name, region and district displayed on your screen.
  5. Confirm that the details match the person requesting access to your premises.

ECG has urged customers to complete the verification process before granting access to inspection personnel.

ECG Provides Contact Details for Customer Enquiries

Consumers who require additional information about the nationwide meter audit can contact the ECG Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611.

Customers can also reach the company through its official social media accounts, @ECGghOfficial, on Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn.

The nationwide meter audit forms part of ECG’s efforts to improve electricity revenue assurance, identify metering irregularities, reduce power theft and strengthen electricity billing accuracy across Ghana.
