Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced plans to resume spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a significant rise in the dam’s water level caused by heavy rainfall.
According to GWL, the water level at the Weija Dam has increased to 45.2 feet after intense rains upstream and continued rainfall across the Densu River catchment area and its tributaries.
With the water level approaching the 46-foot threshold, Ghana Water Ltd says controlled spillage will resume as a precautionary measure to protect the integrity and safety of the dam.
Residents Downstream Urged to Evacuate
GWL has issued an urgent public safety alert to residents living downstream of the Weija Dam, urging them to evacuate the affected areas ahead of the planned spillage.
Residents have been advised to remain vigilant, comply with official evacuation directives, and avoid activities that could put their lives and property at risk.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders have also been urged to take immediate precautionary measures and prepare communities for possible evacuation.

The company stressed that the safety of residents remains its top priority and appealed to the public to cooperate fully with authorities and follow all safety instructions to prevent loss of lives and property.
