A fatal road accident on the Accra-Aflao highway has claimed the lives of 13 people and left 18 others injured after a Toyota Hiace collided with a Ford Transit at MotherKope, near God’s Love Herbal Clinic.
The Ghana road accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026, when the two vehicles, which were travelling in opposite directions, crashed on a hill along the highway.
The Toyota Hiace, with registration number GX 3186-20, was travelling from Accra towards Aflao, while the Ford Transit, registered GW 5558-23, was heading in the opposite direction from Aflao towards Accra.
Ghana National Fire Service Explains Cause of Crash
The Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Divisional Officer Grade II Ebenezer Yenzu, said preliminary investigations indicate that the front of the Ford Transit struck the side of the Toyota Hiace.
According to him, the collision occurred as the Ford Transit was ascending the hill while the Hiace was descending.
The impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles. The front section and doors of the Toyota Hiace were severely mangled, while the Ford Transit also suffered significant damage.
The driver of the Toyota Hiace was among the 18 people who sustained injuries in the Accra-Aflao highway crash.
Firefighters Rescue Accident Victims
DO II Ebenezer Yenzu disclosed that firefighters from Sege received an emergency distress call at 5:58 a.m. and arrived at the accident scene approximately eight minutes later, at 6:06 a.m.
The rescue team immediately began rescue and extrication operations to free victims trapped inside the wrecked vehicles.
All 18 injured persons were subsequently transported to the Sege Polyclinic for emergency medical treatment. Some of the accident victims were later referred to the Ada East District Hospital at FaithKope for further medical care.
Traffic Restored After Highway Accident
Following the rescue operation, Ghana National Fire Service personnel moved the damaged vehicles away from the main road to help restore traffic movement.
Firefighters also cleared debris from the Accra-Aflao highway and cleaned blood spilled at the crash scene before normal traffic flow resumed.
The deadly collision has once again highlighted concerns about road safety in Ghana, particularly on major highways where motorists face increased risks from speeding, difficult road conditions and collisions on elevated sections.
Authorities are expected to continue assessing the circumstances surrounding the crash as efforts remain focused on the recovery and treatment of the injured victims.
