The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has rejected claims by commercial transport operators that rising spare parts prices and vehicle maintenance costs contributed to the recently announced 30% increase in transport fares in Ghana.
The Association described the explanation as false and misleading, insisting that there has been no general increase in the prices of spare parts at the popular Abossey Okai automotive spare parts hub.
In a statement issued on September 6, 2026, the dealers said current market conditions do not support claims that increased spare parts prices were a major factor behind the transport fare adjustment.
Abossey Okai Spare Parts Prices Remain Stable
The Association also challenged assertions by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) that rising vehicle maintenance expenses contributed to the 30% transport fare increase.
According to the spare parts dealers, stock levels at Abossey Okai remain stable, while prices of major vehicle maintenance products, including engine oil and filters, have also remained largely unchanged.
The Association further stated that there have been no significant increases in import duties or major changes in market conditions that could reasonably explain an increase in the prices of automotive spare parts.
Dealers Question Basis for Transport Fare Increase
The Abossey Okai dealers questioned the basis for linking the cost of spare parts sold at the hub to the latest transport fare increase in Ghana.
They pointed out that some commercial transport operators have themselves indicated that they purchase certain vehicle spare parts online, rather than sourcing them from dealers at the Abossey Okai spare parts market.
The Association therefore urged the public and commuters not to accept claims that higher spare parts prices at Abossey Okai were responsible for the recent fare adjustment.
Calls for Transparency in Ghana Transport Fare Decisions
The dealers accused some commercial transport operators of using transport fare increases as a means of putting pressure on government while imposing additional financial burdens on ordinary Ghanaian commuters.
The Association called for greater transparency and accountability in transport fare negotiations, stressing that any adjustment should be supported by verifiable economic data.
It also urged government regulators, transport unions, spare parts dealers and other relevant stakeholders in the automotive and transport industries to participate in discussions concerning Ghana transport fares.
According to the Association, an evidence-based approach would ensure that transport fare decisions accurately reflect prevailing economic conditions and the actual costs faced by transport operators.
