The Supreme Court is scheduled to rule on the two lawsuits challenging the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, often known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, on December 18, 2024.
Dr. Amanda Odoi, a researcher at the University of Cape Coast, and broadcast journalist Richard Dela Sky are contesting the procedures and the approval of the measure that was enacted by Parliament.
The two plaintiffs are requesting the Apex Court’s participation in their separate lawsuit to investigate the legality of the February 2024 bill.
The seven-member panel led by Justice Avril Lovelace-Johnson accepted all of the problems submitted and each party’s statement of case on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
The Court has instructed Richard Sky’s attorneys, under the direction of Paa Kwasi Abaidoo, to submit an updated statement of case by November 22.
The Attorney General (the second respondent) and the Parliament of Ghana (the first respondent), under the leadership of Thaddeus Sory, must also submit their responses by November 27, 2024.
A date of December 18 was set for the delivery of the judgment by Justice Lovelace Johnson’s panel, which also consists of Justice Prof. Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu, Justice Samuel Asiedu, Justice Ernest Gaewu, Justice Yaw Darko Asare, and Justice Richard ADJEI Frimpong.
The same panel in the case of Dr. Amanda Odoi adjourned it to the same day after adopting all of the submitted memorandums of issues, including the parties’ statements of cases.
Murtala Inusah, the Legal Affairs Correspondent for the EIB Network, reports that the two cases would result in two separate judgments despite their similarities.
