President John Dramani Mahama swore in Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s new Chief Justice at a ceremony at the Jubilee House on Monday, November 17, 2025.
The swearing-in comes after Parliament approved his nomination. President Mahama nominated Justice Baffoe-Bonnie on September 23, 2025, in honour of his vast experience and extended tenure in the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court.
He has been Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, following Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s suspension and eventual removal.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie testified before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on November 10, 2025, promising an open-door, bipartisan leadership style and reaffirming his commitment to improving judicial independence and expanding access to justice.
On November 13, Parliament confirmed his appointment with 163 votes in favour and 69 against, setting the stage for his official swearing-in.
