Abedi Ayew, commonly known as Abedi Pele, was born on November 5, 1964, in the city of Dome, near Accra, Ghana.

He grew up in a family of footballers, with his father and uncle both having played for the Ghana national team.

Abedi began his football career at a young age, playing for local club Nima Hearts. He later joined the youth team of Real Tamale United and eventually made his professional debut with the club’s senior team in 1980.

After several successful seasons with Real Tamale United, Abedi moved to Accra-based club Great Olympics in 1982, where he quickly established himself as one of the best players in the league. He then transferred to Al Sadd in Qatar, where he spent two seasons before moving to FC Zurich in Switzerland.

Abedi’s breakthrough came when he signed for Olympique Marseille in 1987, where he won three French league titles and a European Champions Cup. He later played for other notable clubs, including Torino in Italy and Lille in France.

Abedi was a key member of the Ghana national team, earning 73 caps and scoring 33 goals during his international career. He led Ghana to win the African Cup of Nations in 1992 and was named the tournament’s best player. He also played in three World Cups with Ghana, including the 1992 tournament, where he became the first African player to score a hat-trick in the competition.

Abedi retired from professional football in 2000 and has since been involved in various football-related activities, including coaching and administration. He is considered one of the greatest African footballers of all time and has been inducted into the African Football Hall of Fame.
