Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang paid a surprise visit to the team’s hotel in Toronto, giving Ghana’s Black Stars a much-needed morale boost ahead of their opening encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As the Black Stars are ready to start their campaign against Panama at BMO Field, the Vice President met with players, coaches and officials of the national team on Tuesday and gave a motivational speech about togetherness, sacrifice, and patriotism.
Speaking to the team, Professor Opoku-Agyemang stressed the value of cooperation and group accountability and urged the players to prioritise the country’s interests over their own.

“I will encourage you to do even more. I think that group work is part of the strength in sports; it’s about cooperation. Regardless of what your strength is, it becomes even stronger when it is played alongside somebody else, and if in the process you make someone else even stronger, you succeed even more,” she told the players.
The Vice President also emphasised that the entire country will be following their trip with hope and expectation, reminding the team of the tremendous support they receive from Ghanaians both domestically and internationally.
“Ghana is rooting for you. Regardless of where Ghanaians are, whether they are in the diaspora, in the markets, on the farms or in the fields, they are rooting for you. Ghana is behind you. Ghana has high expectations of you,” she said.
She urged the players to embrace sacrifice for the benefit of the team and the nation, and her message struck a deep chord with the camp.
“There are times when you may lose yourself in the interest of the group. That is very important. In the end, it’s about the group’s success. It’s about the success of Ghana.”
Professor Opoku-Agyemang assured the players that the country has faith in them to perform on football’s grandest platform as she wrapped up her speech.
“We are counting on you. We know you will rise to the occasion and you will not let us down.”
The visit coincides with the Black Stars’ final preparations for their pivotal Group L opener against Panama on Wednesday, which might determine Ghana’s chances of making it to the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since 2010.
