The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested 10 suspects during a special operation targeting the alleged sale of cannabis and cannabis-infused products at Koforidua Technical University (KTU) in the Eastern Region.
The arrests were made on the night of Friday, July 31, during activities organised as part of the university’s SRC Week celebrations.
According to NACOC, the operation was launched after intelligence reports indicated that cannabis and cannabis-laced beverages were allegedly being sold to students and other patrons attending the event.
The suspects, made up of nine men and one woman, were apprehended during the raid. Officers also seized several items believed to contain cannabis, including wrapped substances suspected to be the illegal drug, cups of “abele” ice cream, bottles of pineapple juice, sobolo, fresh palm wine, and other beverages.
The Commission disclosed that preliminary field tests conducted on the confiscated products detected traces of cannabis, reinforcing suspicions that the items were intended for distribution and consumption during the event.
All 10 suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations as NACOC works to identify other individuals who may be connected to the suspected drug trafficking operation.
The Narcotics Control Commission reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug-related crimes in educational institutions across Ghana. It also urged the public to support law enforcement efforts by reporting any suspected narcotics activities to the appropriate authorities.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue efforts to tackle the illegal distribution of narcotics and promote student safety on university campuses.
