The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has appealed to the government and the Ministry of Education to urgently complete the Weija-Gbawe STEM School project initiated under the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The MP said completing the school has become increasingly important following the challenges thousands of students have faced during the Senior High School (SHS) placement process this year.
According to Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the STEM school was initially designed to create additional educational infrastructure and reduce pressure on existing schools within the Weija-Gbawe constituency.
“The school was built to at least accommodate our school children and to ease the pressure on the existing schools.”
Weija-Gbawe STEM School to Ease SHS Placement Pressure
The MP noted that the current situation demonstrates the urgent need to complete the facility, as a large number of students have experienced difficulties securing SHS placement because of limited space in existing schools.
“This year, we have seen thousands of students stranded because of the pressure on the existing schools. This is exactly why we need to complete this facility.”
Jerry Ahmed Shaib disclosed that the Weija-Gbawe STEM School project is approximately 70 percent complete, with about 30 percent of the construction work remaining.
“The school is about 70 percent completed. We are only talking about the remaining 30 percent, and I believe this can be completed if there is the commitment.”
MP Calls for Political Differences to Be Set Aside
The Weija-Gbawe MP urged the government and the Ministry of Education to put political differences aside and prioritise the completion of the educational facility.
He said the project should be viewed primarily as an investment in the future of children and the development of education in Ghana.
“Let us put the usual politics aside and look at the interest of the children. Education is about the future of our children, so we should all work together to ensure that this school is completed.”
The MP made the appeal during a ceremony organised to distribute educational materials to students from the constituency who had gained admission to various Senior High Schools.
The initiative is aimed at supporting students as they transition from basic education to second-cycle education.
Call for More Investment in Educational Infrastructure
While emphasising the importance of providing learning materials to students, Jerry Ahmed Shaib said the government must also address the infrastructure challenges facing schools.
He argued that completing the Weija-Gbawe STEM School would help provide additional classroom space and reduce pressure on existing educational facilities.
“We can continue to support our children with educational materials but we must also provide the infrastructure they need. Completing this STEM school will go a long way towards addressing the challenges we are facing.”
The MP therefore called on the relevant authorities to make the completion of the Weija-Gbawe STEM School a priority to improve access to education and help prevent students from being left without adequate school facilities in the future.
