The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) have intensified collaboration to identify, track and disrupt illicit financial flows within Ghana’s gold trading sector.

The partnership was strengthened during the first technical meeting held under a joint programme involving the United Kingdom Ghana Gold Programme (UKGGP), EOCO and GoldBod.

The initiative is aimed at improving monitoring of financial transactions linked to gold trading and strengthening efforts to prevent money laundering, financial crime and other illegal activities within Ghana’s gold industry.

GoldBod Commits to Stronger Compliance

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to working closely with EOCO to ensure that gold trading activities comply with established Ghanaian and international regulatory standards.

He stressed the importance of conducting gold business within credible and traceable compliance frameworks.

According to him, stronger cooperation between GoldBod and EOCO would improve intelligence sharing, financial monitoring and enforcement, while helping authorities identify suspicious transactions and disrupt illicit financial activities associated with the gold trade.

EOCO Highlights Importance of Gold Sector

EOCO’s Head of Investigations, Felix Mawulolo Amegashie, described gold as an important component of Ghana’s economy and said the partnership would provide the two institutions with greater visibility into financial flows within the sector.

He noted that the collaboration would support ongoing efforts to make Ghana’s gold trading industry more transparent, compliant and secure.

The partnership is expected to strengthen the ability of relevant agencies to monitor financial activities across the gold value chain and respond to potential cases involving illicit financial inflows and organised economic crime.

Technical Meeting Begins Joint Operations

The technical meeting represents the operational beginning of the collaboration, moving the partnership beyond broad commitments towards a structured framework involving defined responsibilities, information sharing and joint follow-up actions.

The initiative is expected to improve coordination between the institutions as Ghana works to strengthen governance and accountability in the gold sector.

UK Ghana Gold Programme Supports Gold Sector Reforms

The United Kingdom Ghana Gold Programme (UKGGP) is supporting Ghana’s efforts to develop a transparent, well-regulated and responsibly sourced gold industry.

Its participation in the collaboration provides technical assistance and international best practices aimed at improving standards across Ghana’s gold trading ecosystem.

The enhanced cooperation between GoldBod, EOCO and UKGGP is therefore expected to contribute to stronger financial oversight, responsible gold trading and efforts to combat illicit financial flows in Ghana’s gold industry.
