The Accra-Kumasi Expressway Project has reached another major milestone following the formal handover of the cleared right-of-way to the Government of Ghana.
The handover took place on Monday, September 14, 2026, at Kwaso in the Ashanti Region, with President John Dramani Mahama receiving the cleared corridor on behalf of the government. The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Engineers completed the right-of-way clearing exercise in 19 weeks, one week ahead of the original 20-week schedule.
The clearance covers 175.6 kilometres of the proposed route from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region. The work forms part of the preparatory activities for the construction of the planned 198.7-kilometre, six-lane Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
Mahama Commends Ghana Armed Forces
President Mahama commended the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers for completing the right-of-way exercise ahead of schedule, describing the achievement as an important step towards the construction of the major road infrastructure project.
The project is expected to improve road connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, enhance the movement of people and goods, and support economic activity along the corridor.
The government has also announced plans for the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers to play a major subcontracting role in the construction phase of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
Accra-Kumasi Expressway to Improve Transport
The proposed expressway will provide a new alignment between Ghana’s two major economic centres. According to the government, the 198.7-kilometre route is expected to significantly reduce the travelling distance between Accra and Kumasi compared with the existing highway.
The project is also expected to reduce travel time, improve road safety and lower transportation costs while supporting the movement of commercial goods across the country.
Government has said US$2 billion has been secured for the project, with the Finance Ministry indicating that the funds required for construction are expected to be available by December 2026.
Farmers to Receive Compensation
The right-of-way preparation has also involved agricultural land along the proposed route. More than 800 farmers whose farms fall within the project corridor are expected to receive compensation.
The Ghana News Agency reported that 469 farmers had already received compensation ranging from about GH¢1,500 to GH¢350,000, based on valuation data provided by the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
The government has identified the Accra-Kumasi Expressway as a major transport infrastructure project expected to support economic growth, job creation, regional connectivity and efficient movement of goods and services.
The completion and handover of the cleared right-of-way now pave the way for the next stages of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway construction project.
