The Ghana Police Service, through its Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), is set to begin the full implementation of its automated traffic enforcement system, TRAFFITECH-GH, from October 1, 2026.
The initiative is part of efforts by the police to tackle road traffic indiscipline in Ghana, improve motorists’ compliance with traffic laws and strengthen enforcement of road safety regulations.
In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police and Staff Officer Richmond Mensah, the Ghana Police Service said the automated enforcement programme will use modern technology to identify motorists who violate road traffic regulations.
How TRAFFITECH-GH Will Work
Under the TRAFFITECH-GH programme, cameras and Personal Data Assistant (PDA) devices will be deployed to detect various traffic offences in Ghana.
The police explained that offences captured by the system will first undergo a review before an Electronic Notice of Violation (ENV) is issued to the affected vehicle owner or driver through SMS.
The electronic notice will provide details of the traffic violation and indicate the applicable traffic fine for the offence.
“Detected offences will be reviewed, after which Electronic Notices of Violation (ENV) will be issued to vehicle owners or drivers via SMS. Each notice will clearly state the offence committed and the prescribed fine,” the police statement said.
Police Warn Motorists to Obey Traffic Laws
The Ghana Police Service has urged drivers, motorists and vehicle owners across the country to comply with existing road traffic laws and cooperate with the implementation of TRAFFITECH-GH.
The police said the automated traffic enforcement system is designed to improve road safety in Ghana, discourage reckless driving and other traffic violations, and ultimately help reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities.
The introduction of TRAFFITECH-GH marks a major step towards the use of technology in traffic law enforcement in Ghana, with motorists expected to exercise greater caution and adhere to road traffic regulations from October 1, 2026.
