Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has assured Ghanaians that the full funding required for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be secured by December 31, 2026, without the government borrowing any additional funds.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony at Kwaso, Dr Ato Forson said the major road infrastructure project would be financed entirely through state resources, ensuring that it does not add to Ghana’s existing national debt.
The Finance Minister stressed that the government remains committed to responsible fiscal management while investing in critical infrastructure projects that can support economic development.
According to Dr Ato Forson, the government will have the entire amount required for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project available by the end of 2026.
He further announced that the expressway will become the first major project to be reviewed by the newly established Value for Money Office under the Ministry of Finance.
The office, which has an Acting Director-General in place, will assess the project’s costs and expenditure to promote transparency, fiscal accountability and value for money.
Dr Ato Forson said the initiative would ensure that every cost associated with the road project is properly justified and that public funds are used efficiently.
The Finance Minister also commended the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for completing its technical assignment ahead of schedule, describing the collaboration between the military and the Ministry of Roads and Highways as an important contribution to Ghana’s national development.
The completion of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to significantly improve transportation along one of Ghana’s busiest economic corridors.
The project is also projected to reduce travel time and transportation costs, improve road safety, facilitate the movement of goods and people, and stimulate economic activity in communities along the Accra-Kumasi corridor.
Dr Ato Forson said the government’s focus on fiscal stability is now being translated into investments designed to create jobs, expand economic opportunities and increase national wealth.
The development of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is therefore expected to become a major milestone in Ghana’s infrastructure development and economic transformation agenda.
