The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent out a notice on the recall of service and diplomatic passports that were issued during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The first recall was announced by the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Office of the President in January 2025.

Nevertheless, not all holders of service and diplomatic passports have complied. 387 service passports and 404 diplomatic passports have not been returned.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, directed by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has emphasized that holders of service and diplomatic passports must return them to the Ministry’s Legal and Treaties Bureau by March 17.

Below are the groups of people who must turn in their passports:

– Former Ministers and Spouses

– Former Members of Parliament, irrespective of political affiliation

– Former members of the Council of State and Spouses

– Former/Retired Justices of the Superior and Lower Courts

– Former Regional Ministers, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive Officers of State Institutions, Chairs and Members of Boards

– Officials of the National Cathedral Project

– Former Political Ambassadors and Dependents

– Businessmen and Entrepreneurs

– Former Government Functionaries

– All other persons holding official passports not currently serving in any official capacity for the state or otherwise holding any position that falls under the requirements of Sections 6 and 7 of the Passports and Travel Certificates Act, 1967, NLCD 155.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry emphasized in a statement released on March 10 that any passports in the aforementioned categories that are not returned by the deadline will be revoked.

Additionally, it issued a warning that these documents will be placed on the Stop-Watch List, which means they could be seized at any point of entry or departure into Ghana.
