Hon. Peter Nortsu Kotoe, the member of parliament for Akatsi North in the Volta Region and the chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, has reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to look into and offer suggestions that would help address the issues that Western Region schools are facing.

When the Seventeen Member Committee paid Western Regional Minister Mr. Joseph Nelson a courtesy call at the Regional Coordinating Council in the Western Regional Capital, Takoradi, as part of their monitoring tour to a few private universities and senior high schools, the Akatsi North Legislator made the statement.

The Chairman clarified that the Committee’s oversight duties over the Ministry of Education include monitoring their operations and reporting back to Parliament, which includes the tour of the chosen schools.

In support of this, Mr. Nortsu Kortoe stated that “the introduction of the free Senior High School policy has chalked progress so far but with challenges also adding that infrastructure, lack of furniture among others remains a major challenge among the selected schools toured”.

He underlined that in its efforts to abolish the double-track system, the Committee will advise the Minister and the Government.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Nelson, stated that the committee’s report will help to improve the situation generally and that the tour of the chosen schools in his Region would help to improve and resolve the feeding and infrastructure issues that the schools face. He also emphasized that education is the cornerstone of every country.
