The successful reclamation of the Asenayo Forest Reserve marks yet another important milestone in the government’s continuous efforts to curb illicit mining activities and safeguard Ghana’s forest reserves and water bodies.

Under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ auspices, the Forestry Commission and Security agencies coordinated operations to accomplish this achievement once more.

This strengthens the state’s zero-tolerance policy on galamsey by restoring the eighth of nine high-priority “red-zoned” deposits from armed illegal miners.

During a recently concluded interagency retreat hosted by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Dr. Hugh Brown, the Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, made the announcement and hailed it as evidence of the value of interagency cooperation.

After being invaded by damaging mining operations, the Asenayo reserve is now completely guarded and protected by the state.

In addition to past achievements under Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, who verified the recovery of seven additional reserves through joint military-police-Forestry Commission task force operations, this development underscores the government’s steadfast dedication to safeguarding Ghana’s essential forest resources.

The methodical reclamation approach, which combines ecological restoration, community involvement, and intelligence-led enforcement, has emerged as a paradigm for sustainable natural resource governance.

The Ministry reiterates its commitment to complete recovery, declaring: “No forest land will be ceded to criminals,” with only one reserve still under illegal occupation.

To regain the ultimate goal and guarantee these vital ecosystems’ long-term protection, we are using every available resource.
