The Ghana Prisons Service will receive the items seized during the present decongestion exercise in Accra’s Central Business District, according to an announcement made by Accra Mayor Michael Allotey.

He clarified that although the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) used to auction off confiscated goods, such practice will no longer be followed.

Beginning early on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the AMA is working with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) to carry out the decongestion effort.

It’s part of a larger effort to clean up important areas of the capital, enforce city ordinances, and lessen traffic.

The campaign’s first day concentrated on the vicinity of the AMA Head Office, namely Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka. These locations were found to be significant hubs for street vending and traffic congestion.

After the first day of the operation, Mayor Allotey told reporters that the effort would be stepped up.

“Tomorrow, you are not going to have it this way. I will pack all these things for the prison when I come tomorrow. Today is your lucky day,” he stated.

“This exercise is not a nine-day wonder; we will be on the streets until we ensure that the roads are clear,” the Mayor stated.

Additionally, he emphasized that the program is a part of a larger, ongoing effort to restore public areas and increase mobility for both drivers and pedestrians.
