The Office of the President, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Education are among the institutions for whom the government has authorized an exemption from power payments.

The move is meant to ensure the continuous operation of vital national services in crucial areas like security, health, and education, according to Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor, who made the announcement after a Cabinet decision presided over by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the mandate, he stated, the Ministry of Finance will use its authorized budgetary allocations to cover these institutions’ electrical expenditures.

Auxiliary and non-essential facilities are not included in the exemptions, which are tightly restricted to core operational units.

The exemption in the education sector covers lecture halls, research centers, universities, and science and computer labs. It excludes dining halls, leisure spaces, and dorms.

Medical laboratories, wards, hospitals, operating rooms, and blood banks are all included in the health sector. Recreational facilities and employee housing are not included.

Only vital facilities like emergency systems, military intelligence, and national defense communications are protected for the defense sector. Non-emergency locations are not included.

While other facilities are not excluded, police and emergency response units are within the purview of the Interior Ministry.
