Kennedy Agyapong, a former NPP flagbearer candidate, has said that the party cannot afford to ignore subpar leadership selections, particularly in light of the party’s loss of more than two million votes in the general elections of 2024.

Agyapong informed party members that the NPP has never had a history of giving poor presidential candidates another chance when in Mampong on a condolence visit in memory of the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu.

He said that in the party’s history, losing at the polls has never been followed by another chance. He also said that the party did not give Adu Boahen one after his 1992 loss, pointing out that the party decided to move on despite Boahen’s crucial contribution to Ghana’s democratic comeback.

Many people took his comments to be a jab at former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the NPP in the 2024 elections before losing to the NDC.

Agyapong contends that second chances within the NPP should not be given out of favoritism or an advantage of tenure but rather must be earned via strong electoral performance.

Agyapong, who positioned himself as a reformer, insisted that genuine allegiance to the NPP should be predicated on accountability and outcomes rather than unwavering support.
