The Ghanaian government has declared its intention to impose sanctions on any television networks that broadcast Nigerian films.
The Ghana National Film Authority’s (NFA) Deputy CEO, James Gardiner, declared the nation’s intention to take action against television networks that air Nigerian films without permission.
In a video, James Gardiner announced the news while speaking with Uchenna Mbunabo, a Nigerian producer.
Ghanaian TV stations were accused by the Nigerian filmmaker of obtaining Nollywood films from YouTube and showing them without permission.
“I noticed that Ghanaian TV stations are stealing our films and showing them for free with impunity,” Mbunabo told him.
Is it legal for TV stations to take people’s perspiration from YouTube and broadcast it for free in your country?
Gardiner said, “It’s not legalised.”
“What is your government doing about it?” Mbunabo retorted.
“That’s one of the big things that we’re trying to address,” Gardiner responded.
“We’ve met with the ministry of communication together with NMC and NCA, they govern our TV station in the country. We’re trying to make law to revoke all licenses and all of them will now come to apply afresh.”
“How long it will take, by next year (2027), it should be done.” he said in response to the question
Numerous Nigerian filmmakers, including Bimbo Ademoye, Omoni Oboli, Mercy Johnson, and Ruth Kadiri, have reportedly previously criticised Ghana TVs for showing their films illegally.
Below is a Facebook video of their conversation.
