In an effort to get the Capital Bank founder, Mr. William Ato Essien, who admitted to stealing a total of GH90 million during his trial, to pay the first GH20 million installment of the remaining GH60 million in bank loot, the State has filed an application with the High Court asking for his imprisonment.

After putting down a down payment of GH$30 million, Mr. Essien committed to pay the remaining sum in three installments, the first of which is due on April 28, 2023.

The State filed paperwork to put Mr. Essien in jail after receiving confirmation from the controller and accountant general that no such transfer had been made by him after the deadline.

The State has petitioned the High Court to incarcerate William Ato Essien, the founder of the now-defunct Capital Bank, for failing to abide by the terms of his GH90 million restitution agreement.

Mr. Essien admitted guilt to charges of causing the State to suffer financial loss after entering into a plea agreement with the State in accordance with Section 35 of the Courts Act.

The State claims that Mr. Essien violated the conditions of the plea agreement and is therefore subject to a prison sentence.

Along with the former managing director of the bank, Rev. Fitzgerald Odonkor, and the former managing director of MC Management Service, Mr. Tetteh Nettey, Mr. Essien was charged and put on trial.

They were charged with 23 counts of criminal activity, including theft and theft conspiracy, in connection with the 2017 collapse of Capital Bank.
